Artist in Residence: Sophia Sample

Sophia Sample is an artist living and working in Salisbury. She received a BA in Creative Art in 2012 and an MA in Fine Art in 2014 from Bath School of Art and Design.

Her painting practice focuses on our understanding and experience of time and event, both past and present; as lived experience, and as developed historical narrative. She takes inspiration from the places and moments in which we begin to grasp the enormity of human history; stood before ancient monuments, during periods of isolation or confinement, and before border walls. The paintings, in which the line between representation and reality is finely balanced, reimagine the walls, paint and signage from these places of contemplation and separation. She uses the image of the wall as a symbol of the metaphysical barrier between the parallel cultural and personal meaning of historic events.

When not painting, Sophia shares her interest in art and history with people from all over the world through her work at Salisbury Museum. As with artefacts in museums, the paintings point toward a much larger story, whether it be a switched off light in the deserted corridors of a building closed during a global pandemic or a Russian flag found draped across the front of Salisbury Cathedral.

Sophia’s work has been selected and shown throughout the South West including at the Royal West of England Academy, Wells Art Contemporary, Black Swan Arts, Salisbury Art Centre and the Royal Drawing School in London.

Sophia will be the Artist in Residence at Memory Fine Art gallery throughout 2020/21 and will be exhibiting work in the gallery and sometimes attending the gallery for open days and working from the space. Please get in touch to find out more about Sophia’s work, viewings & gallery visits as we will need to plan in advance for these under social distancing guidelines due to Covid-19.
